Jay Leno has undergone surgery for ‘significant’ burns, doctor says

Jay Leno has undergone surgery for his burns and will undergo a second procedure later this week, according to his doctor.

Leno, an avid car collector, had been working under a vehicle Saturday when it was engulfed in a gasoline fire, said Dr. Peter Grossman, who is handling the former “Tonight Show Host,” said during a news conference Wednesday.

“When he was removed from the area underneath the car, it was noted that he had pretty significant burns on his face and hands,” he said.

“His burns include his face, his hands and his chest, the burns are pretty significant,” Grossman noted.

Leno was first taken to a local hospital and then transferred to the Grossman Burn Center in Los Angeles after the incident.

Leno’s wife has been by his side and “obviously very worried,” the doctor said. Her injuries are a mix of second-degree burns and possibly some third-degree burns, according to Grossman.

“Some of the burns on the face are a little deeper and a little more concerning. Right now they’re in that progression between deep second- and third-degree burns on the face. We’re hoping we can stop them from progressing by using these alternative treatments, like now good wound care and hyperbaric oxygen and aggressive surgical management,” he explained.

“It’s Jay today, he’s walking, he’s cracking jokes,” she said, noting that the comedian is “unbelievably nice” to the hospital staff.

“His injuries are serious, his condition is good,” he said. “I hope he makes a full recovery.”
