Since ending his 15 years as James Bond with “No Time to Die” last year, Daniel Craig hasn’t been idle.
The British star has been busy brushing up on her fantastic footwork, which she shows off with gusto in a new vodka ad directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Taika Waititi.
In the tongue-in-cheek ad for Belvedere Vodka, which premiered last week and runs for over two minutes, Craig goes from enigmatic and enigmatic to cocky and even… funny.
The ad opens with a white-clad Craig standing on a bridge, back to the camera, looking sullenly at the water. The scene could be straight out of a 007 movie. But then something unexpected happens.
With a quick costume change, the 54-year-old sheds the secret agent and unleashes his inner nightclub diva, stomping, pushing and spinning down the street and then around a hotel to a Rita soundtrack Ora and Giggs.
The ad ends with Craig sipping a glass of Belvedere and commenting “at last”. Dancing is thirsty work. after all.
In a postscript, Waititi appears as a caricature of himself as director: an assistant cheers him on while another feeds him sushi. “Here we go again, be yourself,” she tells Craig, who flashes a smile to reveal sparkling diamond “DC” grills.
Judging by the mixed responses online, fans are shocked and excited.
One Twitter user called it “the wildest thing I’ve ever seen”, adding that he couldn’t believe it was Craig.
Another said: “The moral of that Belvedere vodka ad seems clear: ‘get drunk on this drink and you’ll embarrass yourself in public and dad will dance in a way that even Daniel Craig can’t make look cool’ “.
A third commenter wrote on YouTube: “Absolutely wonderful!!! Loved seeing Daniel out of the suave, sophisticated ‘Bond’ persona. Loved that.”
Craig can next be seen reprising his role as madcap detective Benoit Blanc in “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” the sequel to Rian Johnson’s 2019 comedy-drama “Knives Out.”
